How to get into the swim
Lap swimming is easy once you know some basic etiquette, says SGT Rob Orr.

Rules
The more basic pool rules include:

  • for safety, do not run around the pool edge;
  • avoid hanging on lane ropes to prevent damaging equipment;
  • shower before swimming for hygiene;
  • do not take alcohol or glass into the pool area for safety and family comfort.

Speed
Some pools have speed indicators for the lanes – fast, medium, slow – and you should be realistic in choosing your speed, but do not feel embarrassed to change lanes.

Distance
A minimum distance is about a five-second gap from the person ahead. If continuously swimming closer, either move to a faster lane (for lanes with set speeds) or talk to the leading swimmer (not only do many swimmers dislike having someone on “their toes”, but the swimmer ahead must now plan their turns).

Sides
Always swim to the left-hand side of the black lane line, even when alone, as another swimmer may join the lane.

Stopping
Remember to avoid stopping suddenly in the lane, move into the lane rope or, if there is no one oncoming, across the lane.

Turning
When turning, turn in the centre of the lane. If another swimmer is close in front, turn to their left; if close behind, turn as far to the right as possible, allowing them to pass if desired. Watch for oncoming swimmers, even at the ends.

Overtaking
When overtaking, pass on the right, but be aware of oncoming swimmers.

Drinks
Consider bringing a drink bottle as you can still dehydrate in a swimming pool. Place the water bottle and any swimming aids at the shallow end. This will allow easy access and prevent the need to tread water. If stopping to drink or adjust equipment, move into the corner of the lane to stay out of the way.
