Force rugby union players from No. 36 Squadron braved scorching
35° temperatures and mixed results at the Kapooka 10’s rugby union
competition.
36SQN was the only Air Force team to compete in the competition,
held at Kapooka Army base on March 12. Team captain Flight Lieutenant
Jereme Johnson said he was happy with the result, given that the
Air Force team “had only one reserve – most teams had seven”.
The competition kicked off early in an attempt to escape the searing
Wagga heat as 36SQN took the paddock against School of Military
Engineering. The team was slow adjusting to playing with only
10 players and basic mistakes let SME get two easy tries to take
the match 12-5.
The second match against 6RAR from Brisbane was always expected
to be a tough match. But a big effort by the 36SQN team had them
pip the 6RAR side 20-17. With the two qualifying matches over,
each team was selected into one of three divisions, the cup (the
highest), the plate and the bowl.
36SQN qualified for the plate and squared off against the School
of Infantry. In a match dominated by scrums, 36SQN was outclassed
by the size of the School’s pack and lost 7-0.
“Everyone in the team knew we didn’t have the numbers and that
100 per cent effort was required,” FLTLT Johnson said. “Everyone
gave their all.”
