An AFL player is helped by CPL Lee Taylor to abseil safely.

MEMBERS of the AFL Kangaroos took the plunge off the RAAF Base Wagga water tower under the guidance of Air Force PTIs during the team’s recent training camp.

Full-back Shannon Watt said the 52m abseil was a great confidence builder.

“It really does test your ability to trust others,” he said. “But once you overcome your initial fear of giving your weight to the rope, it’s an amazing feeling. Many of us were still shaking with adrenaline on the bus on the way back to the motel.”

A team of Air Force PTIs, led by Flight Sergeant Lou DeBono, supervised the activity, which was attended by the Kangaroos reserve team and about half of the senior team.

FSGT DeBono said only about four or five players didn’t go.

“A lot of them thanked us later on that without us, they wouldn’t have gone over for sure.”
