SIX
Air Force players have been nominated for the 24-man Australian
Services Cricket Association (ASCA) team that will tour the UK
in July.
Chief executive of Cricket Australia James Sutherland has wished
the players and officials representing ASCA well.
“Australian servicemen and cricket have a strong bond, and there
are many historical links between the two, including the Services
XI team after the two world wars, which helped regenerate peacetime
cricket. The image of Australian diggers enjoying a cricket match
at Gallipoli has become iconic and a part of Australia’s history,”
Mr Sutherland said.
“Cricket Australia is honoured that during times of conflict and
times of peace, our game has provided a way for Australian troops
to indulge their passion for sport and forge ties with each other
and those from other countries.
“The ASCA tour of England 2005 is a continuation of this tradition.
“The series will add another chapter to the unique role that cricket
has played in the history of Australia’s defence forces, and its
ability to create bonds, friendship and goodwill.”
