Deseal/reseal
program lump sum offer
THE
Federal Government has agreed to offer a lump sum benefit to people
who were adversely affected by the F-111 deseal/reseal program.
It is proposed that the benefit not distinguish between military
members, public servants or civilians and the lump sum benefit would
be in addition to the rights of individuals under State and Commonwealth
compensation schemes.
The Government will make funds available to the Veterans’ Affairs
Department to provide a cancer and health screening and disease
prevention program.
Defence Minister Robert Hill and Veterans’ Affairs Minister De-Anne
Kelly announced the decision late last year after the Government
considered the Study of Health Outcomes in Aircraft Maintenance
Personnel report.
The Ministers said the government recognised the special nature
of the circumstances of those whose health has been adversely affected
as a result of their workplace environment.
“The planned package represents a significant undertaking by the
Government, and is the result of a long and comprehensive consideration
of the health impacts on the many people involved in the deseal/reseal
programs,” the Ministers said.
“The Government maintains its commitment to helping those personnel
whose health has been affected by their service and work with the
ADF.
“Lessons learnt from the F-111 [Deseal/Reseal] Board of Inquiry
and the subsequent health studies have paved the way for ongoing
monitoring and improvements in the management of our health and
safety practices.”
CAF Air Marshal Angus Houston visited RAAF Base Amberley in late
December after the Ministers’ announcement to talk to the deseal/reseal
veterans and their families.
“I remain committed to doing what I can for them,” Air Marshal Houston
said.
“I am totally committed to making the Air Force workplace a safer
working environment.”
The Ministers’ announcement said giving effect to the proposed lump
sum payment scheme was a priority.
