Squadron Leader David Smith receives his A Category certificate from Commander Air Combat Group Air Commander Mark Binskin.

SQNLDR David Smith, right, receives his A Category certificate from Commander Air Combat Group AIRCDRE Mark Binskin.

SQUADRON Leader David Smith, of No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit, has become the Air Force’s first A Category Operational Flying Instructor (OFI).

To be determined worthy of the award, SQNLDR Smith underwent a week of assessment by the CO of Central Flying School, covering ground and air elements of flying instruction on the Hornet.

The OFI qualification was introduced in 1999 to recognise pilots with experience and qualifications in postgraduate flying instruction in operational military aircraft.

An A Category is only awarded to pilots of exceptional flying ability, knowledge and instructional ability in F/A-18 operations.
Air Commodore Mark Binskin, Commander Air Combat Group, awarded SQNLDR Smith his A Category at RAAF Base Williamtown on November 19.
