11 SQUADRON has evened the score against rivals No. 10 Squadron
in the second Sandy Tait Memorial Australian Rules football game.
11SQN kicked 20.14 (134) to 10SQNs 3.12 (30) in the recent
contest to make up for having lost last years inaugural
match.
Corporal Sandy Tait served with 10SQN before being promoted and
posted to 11SQN in 2002, but he died before the posting, aged
41.
Flight Sergeant Titch Thacker, from 11SQN, said CPL Tait had been
a well respected and valued member at RAAF Base Edinburgh.
He loved life and he loved his sport, so Flight Sergeant
Damien Jackson, from 10SQN, and I got together to organise a football
game in his memory, he said.
Leading Aircraftman Joseph Jackson put the first points on the
board for 11SQN as the team began strongly. In the second quarter,
a revitalised 10SQN got into gear and played hard and fast, but
inexperience and inaccuracy let it down.
Corporal Craig Taylor, of 10SQN, said, The boys had a real
dip in the second quarter, but bad kicking is bad football.
He said 11SQN took the friendly contest to another level of professionalism.
FSGT Thacker said Corporal Adrian Borlace, who was named best
on ground, took the game by the neck, which lifted the rest
of the team.
I think 11SQNs backline was the highlight of the day.
Team captain Flight Sergeant Phil Davenport, who was supported
by Corporals Joel Percy and Mick Devlin, led it well, he
said.
11SQN dominated the last two quarters. Best players for the teams
were Corporals Dale Rule, John Durrant, Matt Rule, Chris Kenny
and Luke Simpson, Aircraftman Tyson Foreman, Sergeant Col Muller
and Flying Officer Adam Frizell.
