AS
WITH Anzac Day, attendances at Remembrance Day services are increasing.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at official services around
the nation on November 11 to remember Australians who died at
war and think of those serving on operations today.
At the newly-refurbished Australian War Memorial parade ground,
wet weather provided an appropriate setting for the ceremony,
according to the Memorial’s Principal Historian, Dr Peter
Stanley.
The weather was a lot like it was in France in November
1918, he said. The wet, drizzly atmosphere gives
a solemn atmosphere to the ceremony.
Patches of blue sky broke through the gloom in Perth for a special
fly-past by two F/A-18s.
The Hornets from No. 75 Squadron conducted the fly-past en route
to an exercise off the Perth coastline. They approached King’s
Park from the east over the Swan River, passing over the gathering
at the memorial.
Four PC-9s conducted a fly-past over the Fremantle War Memorial
at the same time.
The commemorations in Melbourne held extra significance as the
occasion marked the 70th anniversary of the Shrine of Remembrance.
In Sydney, the service in Martin Place ended with a prayer from
Chaplain Alan Asplin for all members of the ADF serving overseas.
Bring them safely home again, he implored.
