Squash trophy lost

AIR Force squash players have achieved some excellent personal results against New Zealand counterparts, but their performances weren’t enough to win the Trans-Tasman Trophy.

The trophy, contested between the ADF touring team and the Royal New Zealand Air Force squash team in October, had been held by the ADF since 1996. New Zealand grabbed it with a 2-1 victory.

The lead-up to the trophy match was more favourable for the ADF team, which won invitational matches against teams from Ohakea, Ohakune and Taupo, but lost against Nelson.

In the RNZAF individual championships, the Air Force players achieved great individual performances. Sergeant Peter Gilkes placed fourth, and Sergeant George Sweeney finished sixth overall.

The other Air Force members were Leading Aircraftman Craig Baldwin, Sergeant Trevor Thorne and Sergeant Madonna Doyle.
