Upgrade at two bases

An Orion comes in to land at Butterworth.

An Orion comes in to land at Butterworth.

THE Defence Infrastructure Sub-Committee has endorsed proposals for a new base training and support facility at RAAF Base Townsville and new headquarters at RMAF Butterworth.

Squadron Leader Ross Hall, of the Infrastructure Development Agency, said operational and combat support facilities at RAAF Base Townsville would be collocated to provide greater functional efficiency and reduce capital and operating costs.

The one complex will include the ground defence section, deployment support offices, general base training and base briefing office. It is expected to be ready in 2007-08.

The project at RMAF Butterworth will consolidate the buildings occupied by No. 324 Combat Support Squadron and No. 92 Wing Detachment into purpose-built accommodation.

“The existing facilities used by 324CSS and 92WG DET A were built in the 1940s and 1950s and have deteriorated to an unsafe level,” SQNLDR Hall said.

The project is scheduled for delivery by late 2006.
