TRADITIONAL wooden-spooners North Queensland made a remarkable turnaround and won the women’s final at the national combined Services netball carnival in Brisbane for the first time.

North Queensland defeated a traditionally successful ACT side 39-25.

In the mixed final, NSW defeated the hosts, South-east Queensland, 35-23.

The male members of the losing side put the loss to the back of their minds and refocused on their men’s final against the ACT 10 minutes later.

The change in mindset worked as South-east Queensland put away a determined ACT team 32-26.

Defence Netball Association president Captain Carla Watts said the national carnival was the biggest it had been for several years.

The five-day carnival was contested by sides from Queensland, Victoria, NSW, ACT, Northern Territory and South Australia.

CAPT Watts said it was fantastic to see six teams in the men’s competition for the first time.

“We’d like to encourage as many men as possible to take part in ADF netball, and would like to see teams from Tasmania and WA at the carnival next year,” she said.

“The women’s style of play is more on tactics and team work, whereas the men’s is a lot harder and faster, more body contact, more aerial play and a little less strategy.”

She said mixed netball was more of a traditional style.

Neither gender nor Service could divide teamwork as the men’s, women’s and mixed Services teams from across the nation artfully stepped and dodged through the round-robin competition and vied for places in the national sides.

CAPT Watts said the combined Services all-star female netball side that was selected at this year’s carnival would play at the international Arafura Games in Darwin next year.

The carnival was held from October 18-22.
