A
DEPLETED Air Force team has narrowly lost the South Eastern Queensland
Interservice Soccer competition after a dominant first half.
The final result was a 4-3 win to Army. Air Force’s preparation
was marred by the loss of two key players just days before kick-off,
however the side was confident it had the skill to counter Army,
according to the OIC of Amberley Air Force Soccer Club, Flying
Officer Patrick Redmond.
Air Force scored two early goals on breakaways through Leading
Aircraftmen Craig Murphy and Adam Humrich. Army struck back midway
through the first half with a goal set up by passes from the
mid- field and wing.
That was incentive for Air Force to pick up and, through Corporal
Sam Moore, Air Force extended its lead with one-onone work and
a clean finish. At the break Air Force led 3-1.
In the second half, two quick goals to Army gave the soldiers
momentum. FLGOFF Redmond said Army out-ran Air Force and put pressure
on for the final 20 minutes. Just when the game looked to head
into extra time, Army received a free kick about 35m out.
It was struck well but the ball hit the cross bar and bounced
back into play. This caused a frantic chase for the ball, with
Sapper Richard Poole heading the winning goal 30 seconds from
full-time.
