Maybe
they made this a sporting romantic comedy to attract male
viewers. Wimbledon, as the name suggests, is set during the
Wimbledon tennis tournament. Peter Colt (Bettany) ranked
11th in the world at his peak (now hes 119th)
is in his last competition. He could never manage to become
a tennis great. Then he meets up-and-comer Lizzie Bradbury
(Dunst) who charms the pants off him, much to her fathers
disdain.
Suddenly, and not surprisingly, Peters tennis world
turns around and he shocks critics by actually winning matches.
The producers convincingly pull off the huge tennis comp scenes,
adding to the theory that this love could actually happen
at Wimbledon.
Bettany plays a great lead character and is much more unassuming
than Hugh Grant. Its also nice to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
make another movie appearance.
