SIXTY-eight
Air Force personnel from RAAF Bases Richmond, Wagga and Williamtown,
and HMAS Albatross have battled a stiff breeze for 16 places on
the Air Force interservice golf team.
The shootout occurred at the 2004 NSW Air Force Golf Championships
and Interservice qualifying trials, held at Richmond Golf Club
from August 30 to September 1.
The A, B and C Grade championships were held as a Stroke event
over 36 holes on the first two days, after which the top 30 scorers
backed up for a hack at a place in the 16-person Air Force NSW
interservice golf team.
The C Grade Champion, Flight Sergeant Mark Moran, said the course
was in great condition and that it presented challenges.
“Amen Corner consists of the 13th, 14th and 15th holes all surrounded
by water,” he said.
“I watched one Richmond player put five balls into the water
at the 15th. He wasn’t giving up.”
FSGT Moran has been playing with RAAF Williamtown Golf Club for
three years and this was his second Championship.
“The field was split into three even grades, based on handicaps.
Competition from the other players was tough with plenty of friendly
sledging.”
