AIR
Force soccer players from around Australia will gather at RAAF
Base Richmond in October to compete in the men’s national competition.
The competition will be used to determine the best state squad
from around Australia, but more importantly it will be used as
the platform for RAAF players to stake their claim for a place
in the Air Force national team.
The national team will compete against the other services at Randwick
in the week immediately after the Air Force national competition.
One of the organisers, Leading Aircraftsman Geoff Gillard, expected
the quality of the games to be of a high standard because of the
playing surface and some players’ experience ranging as high as
Division 1 in their state.
Air Force national coach Corporal Garry Baverstock will select
the national squad. “The selection process will start with a clean
sheet of paper and selection will be based on performances during
the tournament.
Hopefully the selection process will be transparent enough to
void any previous concerns or perceptions about bias selections
or favouritism,” CPL Baverstock said.
During the same week, the Air Force women’s national team will
be in a trial/ training camp.
Any women players who wish to try out for the national team can
email an expression of interest to Flight Sergeant Brett Chapman.
The carnival will be held at Hawkesbury City Soccer Club from
October 25-29.
