Force lawn bowlers won the NSW and the ACT interservice titles
within a week of each other. The NSW lawn bowls carnival title
was retained with two wins from two events where the Services
scored one point for each rink win and three points for the overall
shot margin.
In the ACT competition, Air Force came from 15 points down to
take out the title in which two points were awarded for a round
win and the winning margin considered.
The first match of the NSW event, held August 10-12, had Air
Force against Army. New skippers Sergeant Mick Powell and Corporal
Tony Tapper and Sergeant Bruce Kerr were some of the star players
who gave Air Force a 6-1 win.
Air Force took an early lead in the game against Navy. It went
on to win 5-2. Army finished second. In the ACT event, held August
19- 20, Air Force’s two teams were filled by Flight Lieutenants
Russ Wise and Peter Whittaker, Sergeants John Hicking and Mark
Ferguson and four civilians.
RAAF1 team was the only team to win all their round matches. It
sealed the most valuable player award for captain SGT Hicking.
Air Force took the title with four round wins, eight points and
a combined winning margin of 32 shots.
Army came second. FLTLT Whittaker received the Air Force Best
