THE Australian Services Rugby Union women’s team left the 2004 Telstra Australian Women’s Invitational Tournament in Sydney with one win and a lot of valuable experience.

The 19-7 victory over the Lloyd McDermott Developmental side was the highlight of the round robin competition. ASRU also played but lost to Victoria (0-19), NSW Country (0-53), tournament winners Sydney White (0-34) and in the final, South Australia (0-14).

The sole Air Force player was Officer Cadet Vanessa Stothart. OFFCDT Stothart said it was a great experience to play at a national level.

“I don’t think our team cohesion was as strong as other teams so we let a few teams score points that we could have made ourselves if it wasn’t for some communication errors,” she said.

Head coach Warrant Officer 2 Barry Carr said playing against teams from around the country was the best way for the players to improve their rugby and it worked wonders for confidence.

“We’ve played the three top teams in Australia (Victoria, NSW Country and Sydney White), and the only way they could score tries was to go around us,” WO2 Carr said.

Service members who are interested in playing women’s rugby should contact Captain Julie Green at julie.green@defence.gov.au.
