3 Airfield Defence Squadron has helped Air Force students of the
Australian Command and Staff College (ACSC) gain their annual
requalifaction on individual weapons and increase their knowledge
of Airfield Defence Guard capabilities.
The requalifications were achieved during Exercise Blue Warrior,
which was conducted from July 20-22 at Majura Training Area in
Canberra.
The ACSC students were able to fire introductory practices on
the F88 Steyr. The exercise gave students the opportunity to familiarise
themselves with ADG weaponry during a static display.
They saw section-level ADG skills in a field environment, standing
to the rear of a live fire section ambush on simulated targets.
They then moved to the section attack range where students were
able to stand in the enemy position or walk 5m behind the assaulting
force to see a section of 10 ADGs locate, engage, fix and destroy
an opposing force.
They witnessed the firing of the M18A1 Anti Personnel Claymore,
84mm Carl Gustav Short-Range Anti-Armour Weapon and a number of
machine guns.
Students viewed night firing through the night vision equipment
and were impressed. The demonstrations also featured a battlefield illumination display enhanced by the firing of the Mag 58
machine gun out to 1km.
CO of 3AFDS Squadron Leader Simon Sauer, who briefed the group,
said graduates needed to understand the capabilities offered to
commanders.
“It was good to see the enthusiasm from the ACSC students and
their willingness to learn and participate in the organised activities,”
SQNLDR Sauer said.
“This is the second year that [Airfield Defence Wing] has provided
personnel to demonstrate AFDS capabilities to ACSC and it appears
to be well received.”
