Over 1000 security clearances changed

MORE than 1000 permanent and Reserve Air Force personnel have had their Secret or Top Secret security clearance downgraded to Confidential as part of the Defence Security Authority’s revalidation program.

DSA has downgraded 4966 ADF members – including 715 regular Air Force and 465 Reserve Air Force members – as well as about 1000 Defence civilians.

In many cases, the downgrades result from DSA’s inability to contact and locate the personnel involved. DSA have been contacting more than 23,000 current clearance holders to determine their continued need for a clearance at the current level.

Anyone who has held a clearance granted before December 1, 1998, who has not been contacted by DSA regarding revalidation should check with their Facility Security Officer or Unit Security Officer or the appropriate DSA office for advice about whether their clearance has been affected. Phone 1800 008 306.

All clearance holders who have returned their revalidation documents (and where a clearance at Secret or Top Secret is still required) will be contacted by DSA in order of priority for clearance re-evaluation purposes. Clearances will remain valid until that re-evaluation process occurs.
