Air Force’s new plan links work to vision

AIR Force personnel should be able to see clear links between the objectives of the latest Air Force Plan and the initiatives being planned across Air Force, according to CAF Air Marshal Angus Houston.

The new plan sets out 16 objectives for the Air Force to achieve, which will help to inform subordinate plans for Air Command and Training Command – Air Force and will clearly link to activities conducted at force element group, wing and unit levels.

The two key result objectives of the fifth and latest version of the Air Force Plan are:

  • air and space capability that defends Australia and promotes its national interests; and
  • an Air Force networked and positioned for the future. Further objectives are aimed at enabling the Air Force to achieve these results, while also providing a framework for retaining and attracting people in the Air Force.

Some initiatives are ongoing and include:

  • conducting an interoperability survey that will help ensure Australian platforms integrate seamlessly into coalition operations;
  • creating a training program for Joint Force Air Component Command and Air Operations Centre staff to develop specialised skills and competencies;
  • determining future doctrine, concept drivers, strategies and technology drivers, including capability roadmaps;
  • improving communication flows via the chain of command;
  • reviewing the Air Force International Engagement Plan; and
  • providing Air Force with a flexible remuneration and conditions of employment system to attract and retain people.

Progress against the performance measures in the plan will be reported to the Chief of Air Force Advisory Committee on a bi-monthly basis.

The development of the Air Force Plan involved consultation with Air Command and Training Command. Air Force members were also given the opportunity to have their say through a feedback page on the intranet, with the comments received being used to improve the new plan.

Feedback is welcomed and can be sent to airforce.plan@defence.gov.au
