Paradise washes up difficult sail

TRYING sailing conditions made for a tough 10-race competition in this year’s Tasar national championships at Mission Beach. Seven ADF personnel battled in three Defence Tasar dinghies against 63 other boats for the laurels.

Team captain Corporal Ross McDonald, from RAAF Base Richmond, said unusually light winds and tricky tidal currents provided challenging sailing conditions that favoured the lighter crews.

Commander Martin Linsley and Flight Lieutenant Nick Grey, from RAAF Base Williamtown, won the invitation race and finished fifth overall.

CPL McDonald and Leading Aircraftman Mick Campbell, from RAAF Base Richmond, finished 40th, while Lieutenant Mike Wadley and Flight Lieutenant John Force, from RAAF Base Townsville, were 49th. CPL Steve Worthington, from RAAF Base Amberley, won Volunteer of the Regatta.
