THE
traditional family reunion in December couldn’t wait for Lauretta
and Sam Webster.
Lauretta surprised her sibling recently by meeting her on the
tarmac of the Baghdad International Airport. “It is great to see
her, I’ve not seen her since Christmas,” Sam said.
“I’ve been to Baghdad before, but this is the first time I’ve
had a welcoming party!”
Lauretta was over the moon to see her sister, even under such
unusual circumstances.
Both of them are serving in the Middle East – Sam as a pilot flying Hercs into the airport and Lauretta as an analyst with the
Australian National Command Headquarters at Camp Victory, adjacent
to Baghdad airport.
The Websters grew up in Drysdale, near Geelong in Victoria, and
were the best of friends, sharing everything, including an interest
in the Air Force.
For Samantha, an Air Force pilot was an obvious career choice.
“I have been fascinated by flying since I was about nine years
old,” she said.
Lauretta, the younger of the sisters, listened to Sam’s stories
of life at ADFA and decided to investigate career options in the
Air Force, too.
“I was attracted to the linguistics aspect,” Lauretta said.
“As I looked further into the options available at ADFA I decided
to join the Air Force as an analyst.”
