THE
Air Commander Australia, Air Vice-Marshal Geoffrey Shepherd, and
Air Command Warrant Officer Ray Woolnough have visited the Air
Traffic Control Detachment at Baghdad International Airport as
part of ACAUST’s Operation Catalyst tour.
After a briefing by senior detachment executives, ACAUST toured
the Air Force compound, discussing airspace management, combat
support and force protection with executives and personnel.
A “combat barbecue” was next on the agenda, giving AVM Shepherd
an opportunity to mingle with personnel.
In an impromptu speech, he passed on his thanks for the outstanding
and continued efforts of Air Force personnel in the Area of Operations
and in the particularly difficult environment of Baghdad.
The Air Traffic Control element has been busy in Iraq, handling
on average more than 400 aircraft movements each day.
