A
MEMORIAL has been unveiled commemorating 14 Australian military
personnel and five American servicemen killed in a World War II
plane crash in a remote part of Queensland.
A contingent of eight personnel from RAAF Base Townsville took
part in the recent memorial service organised by the Bauhinia
Shire Council and Springsure RSL sub-branch.
The DC3’s crash, at Rolleston in the Carnarvon Gorge on November
16, 1943, killed seven Australian Air Force and seven Army personnel
as well as five Americans.
CPL George Hannah played a lament on the bagpipes as part of the
service.
Also representing the Air Force were WOFF James McLellan, SGT
Paul White, LACW Kirsty Barklem, LACW Erin Dedman, LACW Erica
Kane, LAC Brett Collinson, and LAC Kurt Rehbein.
