DEFENCE
surfing has received an upsurge of interest following the tri-service
surf riding carnival at Port Stephens.
Seventy-two ADF personnel enjoyed near champagne conditions at
the inaugural event from April 21-23, in which a crowd of interested
locals were treated to some dazzling manoeuvres.
Air Force team manager corporal Grant Robinson said the event
went "unbelievably well" and had generated major interest
in the sport across the ADF. He was receiving dozens of calls
from Defence surfers in the other states asking how they could
become involved. An application has now been made to the NSW inter-service
Sports Council and ADF Sports Council to have the sport recognised
as an official inter-service sport.
Meanwhile, the RAAF Base Williamtown Boardriders’ Club is planning
a weekend at Bonny Hills, near Port Macquarie on May 28-30. And
surfers at Enoggera and HMAS Cerberus are endeavouring to set
up their own clubs and competitions.
Queensland surfers from all three services interested in getting
involved should contact Corporal Ben Wright at Enoggera on (07)
3332 5234 or email benwright5@hotmail.com.
Any NSW Defence surfers interested in going to Bonny Hills should
contact LAC Brad Spencer on (02) 4964 5244 or email brad.spencer@defence.gov.au
