ADF lawn bowlers have taken on the law – and escaped with gold and silver.

The ADF’s eight-man team took gold and silver medals in the Pairs and silver in the Fours to thwart the favourites, WA Police, in the 32-team event at the Australian New Zealand Police and Emergency Services Games in Perth from March 21-26.

The Games, a multi-sport extravaganza, attracted more than 1500 fire, ambulance and law enforcement personnel from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Four ADF teams contested the preliminary rounds of the Pairs. Two of them won all four games to earn semi-final berths. The aggregate winning margins of each of the semi-finalists meant Army’s Warrant Officer 2 Gary Kern and Air Force Sergeant Scott Kohler would not meet Army’s Corporal Chris Venning and Air Force Corporal Tony Tapper until the final, providing both pairs could overcome their respective WA Police opponents.

WO2 Kern and SGT Kohler won seven of the opening eight ends of their semi-final 17-6 and were never threatened.
CPLs Venning and Tapper had a tough struggle and took until the 15th end to draw level. They scored three shots then one shot on the last two ends to win 13-9.

This set up an all-ADF showdown in the final. CPLs Venning and Tapper started slowly and the margin should have been double figures after five ends but errors by WO2 Kern and SGT Kohler resulted in their trailing by just one shot.

CPLs Venning and Tapper then found their form and coasted to a 26-15 victory.

The four bowlers then combined for the Fours gold medal play-off against WA Police’s best side. They got off to a flying 12-4 lead then lost seven out of the next eight ends to trail 13-17 with five ends to go. After 21 ends the WA Police players were rewarded for their consistency and superb tactics with a 22-16 win. The ADF team had to be content with a hard-fought silver.
