All Stars shine in Sydney

By PTE John Wellfare

AIR Force’s Leading Aircraftman Michael Kemp was voted Best on Ground at a recent Australian Football game in Sydney.

The ADF All Stars dominated play against the Combined Emergency Services (CES) team for the AFL Services Challenge Cup at Telstra Stadium on April 24.

With a decisive 78-point win, All Stars’ assistant coach, Air Force Corporal Paul James, said the game was clinched in the third quarter.

“Third quarter we came out hard [after] we’d had a little bit of a chat in the changerooms,” he said. “We sort of ran over the top of CES because we played good, running, defence force style footy.”

The success in the third quarter (11-4-70 to 5-2-32) allowed the ADF team to relax and ride in on their high score for the last quarter to win 17-9-111 to 5-3-33.

“We just let the boys enjoy themselves and I think they did that,” CPL James said.

The game was played as a curtain-raiser to the AFL match between the Sydney Swans and the Melbourne Demons.
LAC Kemp will be presented with the match ball after it has been autographed by the members of the Swans.

Five other Air Force Australian Rules footballers also played in the ADF All Stars team (see separate box).

Umpires were FSGT Eric Rodgers, SGT Greg Watt, LAC Troy Edwards, SGT Jack Daniel and CPL Mike Read.
