"I know some good tricks," said the Cat in the Hat, "I will teach them to you and your mother will not mind at all if I do."

Disappointingly, that line isn't even in the movie based on the said cat. In fact, the movie deviates from the book quite significantly.

Like the book, however, it is funny and lots of fun - and it's fun to have fun.

There's plenty of balancing and rhyming at the beginning, and who can resist a 6ft cat in a hat?

Cat in the Hat is Dr Seuss from start to finish. It's bright and cheery, even in its disorder, and it's out to teach you a life-lesson.

Play nicely with your brother, don't let strange cats into the house, don't conspire with the cats against your mum, there's a fine line between too much fun and creating havoc and listen to the sage advice of fish. You'd also do well to adopt the phone manner of the mother.

In a sense, you're reintroduced to Myers' other clever characters - Fat Bastard, Dr Evil and Goldmember - except the voices and mannerisms are from a cat in clothes.

You know it's a kids' film, so don't expect adult themes, although it does cater for the adult audience with some quips the kiddies wouldn't pick up on.

It is great fun all round, and another fur ball in the bag for the very talented Mike Myers

Simone rates this movie 4 out of 5
