Udaunted
by a carnival in which two days were lost to rain, Queensland
Air Force put up a solid two-days’ performance on a softened pitch
to narrowly lose out to North Queensland Army in the Queensland
Interservice Cricket Carnival.
Air Force played North Queensland first up and, after winning
the toss, elected to field.
Army made a very competitive 8 for 196.
Air Force came out briskly and was in fi ne shape at 3 for 78
with Leading Aircraftman Dan Amiet and Corporal Mitch Dockett
on 22 and 21.
However, once they were dismissed, Air Force collapsed under determined
bowling to finish 83 runs adrift.
Air Force then took on South Queensland Army to decide second
place. Air Force won the toss and decided to bat.
It was a sound call as the team made a smart start thanks to Aircraftman
Phil Wooster, who with skill and determination hit South Queensland’s
bowling all over the ground in a quick 31.
CPL Dockett also showed good form with 39.
Signalman Bob Fisher (6) and Corporal Ian Chattin (8 n.o.) then
provided some more handy runs before Air Force was all out for
146 and the sides changed roles.
South Queensland looked solid in the chase, but a collapse in
the middle order saw all hopes fall on a determined and defi ant
rear guard action.
Air Force staved off the challenge to record a four-run victory.
Corporal Dean Burke picked up 4 for 23 off 10 overs. The carnival
produced some first-class batting and bowling but North Queensland
Army’s solid performance enabled it to leave Brisbane with the
Interservice shield firmly in its grasp.
