A NEW purpose-built facility for No. 1 Airfield Defence Squadron has opened at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

Specifically designed and constructed to meet the needs of permanent 1AFDS personnel and full and part-time reservist Airfield Defence Guards, the facility includes a new armoury and vehicle compound and a refurbished headquarters building previously occupied by the Maritime Patrol Systems Program Office.

A traditional parade and plaque unveiling ceremony marked the official opening of the new buildings and relocation of 1AFDS HQ by Commander Combat Support Group Air Commodore Andrew Kilgour on March 19.

Guests included veterans from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Providing an opportunity to reunite and reminisce, Vietnam veterans and members of the Instructional Cadre from No. 1 Aerodrome Defence Squadron were amazed at the trade knowledge and technology displayed by current members of 1AFDS.

The event included a tour of facilities and displays of Military Operations in Urban Terrain, field communications, Squadron headquarters, logistics section, aircraft security operations and the Quick Reaction Force.

1AFDS Commanding Officer Squadron Leader Richard Harbron said, “The Ground Defence Reserve Group is continuing to expand and the ability to train and operate out of these superb facilities ensures an effective airfield defence capability can be generated and maintained. As well as the ability to instruct personnel, equip them, and store their equipment within one building, the close proximity to transport and weapons ensures best use of their time.”
