Missile
strike
AN Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM) fired by an
Air Force F/A-18 has successfully smashed a wingtip burner on
a Kalkara launched from the RANs Jervis Bay airfield.
The successful strike was part of the testing of the new missile
by the AIR5400 Project Office.
Technicians at Jervis Bay had removed the Kalkaras usual
tows and launchers in favour of infra-red wingtip burners to direct
the missile towards the wingtip to minimise damage to the drone.
The damaged burner was presented to the AIR5400 team as a souvenir.
Training services
THE ADF will invest $45.5 million over the next five years in
jet aircraft services to support combat training.
Sydney-based company Pel-Air Aviation Pty Ltd has won the contract
to provide the services, including aerial target towing, fighter
controller training, maritime strike and adversary flying for
Air Force fighter pilot training as well as support for Air Force
and Navy work-ups and exercises.
The aircraft will be based at the RAN Air Station at Nowra.
Sale
warning
AIR Force members are advised not to sell military equipment and
field uniforms without proper authorisation.
This follows incidents where military personnel have sold items
such as equipment of the type used in Afghanistan and Iraq. Any
sale or attempted sale of military equipment and field uniforms
by ADF personnel will be investigated and disciplinary action
will be considered.
Saving water
DEFENCE has signalled that water resource issues are a key priority
on its environmental agenda with the release of the Defence Sustainable
Water Management Strategy.
The strategy outlines Defences commitment to reduce water
consumption, minimise wastage and maximise use of waste water
across Defence properties.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Fran Bailey,
who launched the strategy, said Defence spent about $13 million
a year on water.
Under the strategy, Defence will include water-saving measures
in the design of new buildings and in the purchase of equipment
and facilities, include metering in selected new facilities and
progressively install metering at existing high water-using sites.
Memorial
wall
A MEMORIAL wall has been unveiled to students and military and
civilian staff that have died while serving at the Australian
Defence College Weston Campus. The stone wall overlooks the lake
at the college. Three smaller plaques in memory of individuals
were also dedicated at the ceremony.
