Your Career

Compare your salary

HAVE you ever wondered how your salary package compares to the outside world?

How do you think your superannuation package stacks up? What would another employer have to offer you to match your current ADF salary package?

For personnel contemplating separation from the Air Force or for those who are curious, the Comparative Employment Value Adjustable Model (CEVAM) provides the answers in a do-it-yourself computer questionnaire that gives you a salary figure to compare with jobs outside the ADF.

The results from the latest Your Say Survey indicate the majority of Air Force members are unaware of the existence of the CEVAM. Of those who are aware, many are unsure about how reliable it is. Others may know what benefits ADF employment provides, but lack information on how it compares to civilian employment.

For comparisons, CEVAM uses information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. CEVAM looks at the dollar value of:

  • salary;
  • salary-related allowances (for example, Service Allowance, Field Allowance);
  • Deployment Allowance or deployment-like allowances;
  • employer superannuation contributions (this is in addition to your member contributions);
  • motor vehicles (for one-star officers and above);
  • the Medicare Levy that ADF members don’t have to pay;
  • ADF medical and dental services; and
  • housing subsidies for ADF members (for example, Rent Allowance).

CEVAM is designed to provide a realistic comparison with employment outside the ADF.

Comparisons are based on ADF members’ taxable income only so that tax deductions for various types of jobs doesn’t interfere with the calculations. The spreadsheet/questionnaire is adjustable so that you can select your own personal circumstances from a range of options.

CEVAM provides only a general guide to the value of ADF remuneration and broad comparisons with other employment groups. Users of this information are advised to consult a qualified financial adviser before deciding on any future career plans.

To access CEVAM, use the link on the DPE resources page at http://defweb.cbr.defence.gov.au/dpe

Commission targets

APPLICATIONS for the AAA Scheme and direct commissioning in the Air Force for F/Y 2004-2005 close on November 30.

DPO-AF cannot process applications after that date because of the requirement for testing, presentation to an Officer Selection Board, and attendance at OTS later in 2004.

For ADF enlisted members seeking the long-term benefits of a degree, the Air Force AAA Scheme at ADFA has vacancies in the following specialisations: ADMIN (2 targets), AERO (3 targets), AFENG (1 target), AIRDEF (1 target), ATC (2 targets), ELECTR (10 targets), INTEL (2 targets) and LOG (3 targets).

For direct commissioning into the Air Force workforce, ADF enlisted members may apply to one of the following specialisations: ADMIN (5 targets), AERO (1 target), AIRDEF (4 targets), ARM (1 target), ATC (5 targets), BAND (1 target), ED (1 target), ELECTR (5 targets), ENVH (1 target), GRDEF (1 target), INTEL (3 targets), LOG (3 targets) and PLT (5 targets).

Direct commissioning targets for F/Y 2003-2004 have closed, but qualified musicians can apply to DPO-AF for Band Officer (1 target).

Further information about Air Force commissioning is available in the DPO-AF commissioning messages recently sent to Defence units, on the DPO-AF website at http://intranet.defence.gov.au/raafweb/sites/dpo/ and from Corporal Nikki Evans in DPO-AF on (02) 6265 5170.

Base visits

THE Personnel Strategy Implementation team will visit all bases to provide more in depth and up-to-date reports on its projects.

Implementation of the Personnel Strategy will affect all Air Force people.

The most significant effect will be the launch of People Central, the interactive, web-based portal designed to be the “one-stop shop” for all personnel management issues.

No matter what rank or position you hold, you are strongly encouraged to attend one of the briefings so that you have a better idea of how you will be affected when the changes are made.

As well as People Central, the presentations will cover RAAF Individual Career Plans, Job Search and Expressions of Interest.

After the initial part of the presentation there will be an additional element for officers that covers Any Officer employment and Sub-Specialisations. There will be ample opportunity for questions.

Presentations were scheduled at Tindal, Darwin and Pearce from November 17-19. Other presentations are:

  • November 20: Edinburgh
  • November 25: Williamtown
  • November 27: Richmond
  • November 28: Glenbrook
  • December 1: Townsville
  • December 2: Amberley, Wagga
  • December 3: Laverton
  • December 4: East Sale

Look out for notices advertising the presentation timings and locations or contact your base visits coordinator.

Alternatively, contact Sergeant Kevin Barnes at DPSI-AF on (02) 6266 5006.
