NCO
leadership and development discussions were begun by CDF General
Peter Cosgrove at the recent Centre for Defence Command, Leadership
and Management Studies forum in Canberra.
The forum raised the issue of corporate and cross-organisational
awareness of the current extent and nature of NCO leadership and
management, and allowed for an exchange of ideas concerning future
directions for NCO training.
The inclusion of five New Zealand Defence Force representatives
broadened the scope of discussion points for methods of further
improvement.
Representatives from across the ADF contributed with informative
discussion on the future direction of NCO training, which led
to a range of suggested options being considered, including the
possibility of joint NCO training.
A presentation by WO1 Chris Dunne on the need to consider joint
operational training for NCOs
(based on his experiences as the Australian Theatre Sergeant Major)
and a presentation on the importance of NCO leadership training,
by an SASR warrant officer, based on his experiences on Operations
Falconer and Slipper, were of particular interest.
