Airspace reform’s next stage

By CPL Damian Shovell

STAGE 2B of the National Airspace (NAS) Reform will be implemented on November 27. 2B is the next step in a plan to make the Australian NAS system reflect the US NAS regulations, providing for easier commercial and Defence interoperability.

Wing Commander Jack Foley, NAS Project Officer, said although some ADF aviators had voiced concerns about the NAS changes, the advantages for Defence would become apparent during joint exercises and operations with the US.

“This is the biggest change in Australian airspace that we’ve had in decades, and inevitably not all people are happy with all the changes,” he said. “Consultation is ongoing and feedback is being actively sought to address any concerns.

During the implementation of the NAS process, Defence opinions and interests are being voiced and represented by CAF, who is a member of the governing board, the Aviation Reform Group, which is actively overseeing the NAS introduction.”

Comprehensive training packages are being produced and printed and will soon be disseminated to all aircrew throughout the ADF. Future stages will also be supported by comprehensive educational material.
