Information warning

By PTE John Wellfare

FOREIGN intelligence services, issue-motivated groups and investigative journalists could use internet sites such as Schoolfriends.com to home in on Defence personnel, according to the Defence Security Authority.

A number of ADF members have been using the internet to locate friends from previous postings, but some information about work history and current duties could be classed as official and therefore restricted.

Defence members have the right, like all citizens, to make public their own personal information in any way they see fit.

DSA warned, however, the line between personal and official information could be thin and suggested all ADF members who have posted details about past or current employment within Defence on a publicly accessible website to review it immediately.

Anyone requiring assistance in determining whether information is official or not, is advised by DSA to contact Bob Lester, Defence Internet Manager, PACC, on (02) 6265 3589 or email bob.lester@defence.gov.au.
