AGGRESSIVE defence of an airfield in hostile territory was the task of Airfield Defence Guards (ADGs) who took part in Croc 03.

Taking over protection of Williamson Airfield in Shoalwater Bay Training Area after its capture by Army paratroopers from 3RAR, No. 2 Airfield Defence Squadron kept up a rigorous patrol schedule to detect and destroy threats before they could close on the key asset.

Commanding Officer Squadron Leader David Paddison said the unit’s role on Croc 03 was a typical tasking for 2AFDS.

“3RAR had secured the airfield and then 2AFDS flew in by C-130 and we conducted a relief-in-place of the airfield from 3RAR and assumed responsibility for the security of the airfield, while 3RAR was then released to go and conduct further operations for the brigade,” he said.

He said the ADGs also assumed responsibility for some of the forward edge of the battle area and, while unusual, it was “a good challenge for the guys”.

2AFDS deployed on Croc 03 for five days, arriving at the end of the scenario-based blank-fire phase of the exercise.
