A
PARADE through Townsville and a dining in night were organised
by RAAF Base Townsville to mark the recent Centenary of Townsville
and the Centenary of Powered Flight.
With swords drawn, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying,
members of RAAF Base Townsville exercised their Freedom of the
City of Townsville on August 8, while a Centenary Dining In Night
was held at the base.
Led by Base Commander Wing Commander Glendan Krause, about 400
personnel from units on the base participated in the march.
Units represented included No. 323 Combat Support Squadron, No.
27 (City of Townsville) Squadron, No. 1 Combat Logistics Squadron,
Combat Survival and Training School, No. 395 Expeditionary Combat
Support Wing and Australian Air Force Cadets from No. 101 Squadron.
RAAF Military Working Dogs from 323CSS also marched with their
handlers and proved popular with spectators.
The Air Command Band and the Townsville Brass Band provided stirring
military music for the occasion. 38SQN also provided a Caribou
for a flypast when the march passed the saluting dais.
The Freedom of the City was first granted to RAAF Base Townsville
on December 23, 1971.
Meanwhile, more than 120 guests attended the centenary Dining
In Night, including about 50 prominent Townsville personalities.
The function with the backdrop of a Caribou was held in the 38SQN
hangar which looked on to the sights, sounds and lights of the
airfield.
Speakers included Wing Commander Geoff Lydeamore, Squadron Leader
John Leroy (retd) of the Townsville Air Force Museum, Councillor
Jack Wilson, and Squadron Leader Noel Hinschen and Flying Officer
Anne Prior. Air Commander Combat Support Group Air Commodore Stewart
Cameron was the guest of honour.
