Maintenance change

By Jim Barndon

THE recent completion of depot level maintenance on one of the Air Force’s B707 aircraft also signified the end of 44 years of aircraft maintenance carried out by Qantas at Mascot Airport on this aircraft type.

The aircraft, A20-623, which has been in maintenance since September 2002, was last month towed from Hanger 131 at Mascot and handed over to a crew from No. 33 Squadron.

It and the Air Force’s other three B707 aircraft will now be serviced at a Boeing facility at RAAF Base Amberley.

Flight Lieutenants Richard Dell and Mark Matheson, and Warrant Officers Stuart Mathews and Chris White, carried out the necessary acceptance checks before A20-623 was cleared for its flight to Amberley.

The aircraft was originally a Qantas operated aircraft, VH-EAC, and had been used overseas in the UK and Canada.

It had been delivered to No. 33 Flight in June 1981 along with another ex-Qantas B707.
