Take a look at the figures

AIR Force had an overall strength of about 13,600 people on July 1.

Within this figure though, some specialisations and musterings are experiencing surpluses, while others have shortfalls.

The surpluses have occurred as a result of successful recruiting and reappointment/re-enlistment initiatives, along with the strong retention of personnel.

Funding for uniformed Air Force people in FY03-04 is only sufficient for a total strength of 13,400. Therefore, Air Force will need to make adjustments to the overall size and mix of its workforce during the year.

Retention remains strong, so the plan is to make adjustments by refining recruiting targets and controlling the number of full-time Reserve positions. The aim is to progressively balance the Air Force over the next few years.

In the meantime, some employment groups will continue to experience deficiencies against establishment as this effort continues to draw down the surplus in a few employment groups.

These surpluses will gradually reduce over time as a result of natural attrition, promotions, and conservative recruiting targets.

For further information on Air Force workforce numbers contact Wing Commander John Harwood on (02) 6265 3483.
