Survey on motivation

IN support of retention management, Defence is interested in knowing what motivates ADF personnel to continue serving.

To assist with this effort, the Topical Issue Section of the July Your Say Survey is “ADF Service: What Motivates You?”.

The Your Say Survey is a mechanism to assist Defence to stay in touch with trends and changing attitudes and perceptions of Defence members. The latest edition will help to understand what aspects of ADF employment are most important to ADF members.

The survey will be sent to 10 per cent of Defence personnel, with the sample stratified by rank. The various aspects of employment that are motivators have been broken down into various categories such as:

  • the job; which includes job diversity, recognition for work done etc,
  • job opportunities,
  • the people,
  • the lifestyle,
  • training and professional development,
  • financial aspects,
  • the extras; which includes allowances, benefits, entitlements etc, and
    noutside influences.

Each of the categories comprises specific aspects of ADF employment, for example “job opportunities” includes aspects such as promotion prospects, flexible employment options, involvement in operational deployments, and overseas postings.

The survey aims to identify what motivates members to serve in the ADF and how satisfied you are with these various aspects of employment at the present time.

It will also help Defence to understand how you perceive ADF employment compares with outside opportunities. Personnel policies and practices can be influenced by Your Say results, which is why your input is valued.
