THE
Air Force Intranet, or Raafweb as it is called, continues to grow
in popularity after a new version was installed.
In March Raafweb underwent an extensive upgrade, changing from the
experimental version known as the Defence Site Engine to the full
production version now known commercially as ComWeb.
Raafweb has about 350 distinct sites now active or in the process
of being made or converted from other applications. Raafweb Administrator
(or webmaster) Leading Aircraftman Richard Stonyer said Raafweb
enabled personnel, regardless of IT skills or Web knowledge, to
create a basic site for their unit by referring to a revamped instruction
manual.
We are finding units are using the Intranet for such activities
as promotion of events, both to their own personnel and to others
in the Air Force, posting Standing Instructions so they can be updated
and accessed from a central location, providing the latest in news
and putting up photos of personnel and events, LAC Stonyer
said.
Raafweb is sponsored by the Directorate of Policy and Plans (DGPP)
within Air Force Headquarters. DGPP sees it as a valuable tool for
information dissemination and more cost-effective in training personnel
in web-authoring tools and maintenance on local servers.
Raafweb can also link into document management systems and any corporate
databases.
Air Force policy being drafted will soon require Air Force Intranet
web sites not already using the Raafweb application to change over
by the end of 2003.
