A fine mess for Townsville

Corporal Chris Stephens, President of the Airmen’s Club – the Wirraway Club; Warrant Officer Tony Ward, Chairman of the Sergeants’ Mess Committee; and Squadron Leader Tony Banner, President of the Officers’ Mess Committee, break the ground at the site of the new RAAF Base Townsville mess.
OFFCDT Jim Holman meets his dad’s old Army platoon commander.
WORK has started on the construction of a new combined mess as part of the ongoing RAAF Base Townsville redevelopment project.

The first sods for the facility were turned on May 30. The modern, air-conditioned combined mess will replace the separate Officers’, Sergeants’ and Airmen’s Messes, whose existing buildings date back to the 1940s.

While there will be three separate and distinct new messes built, they will be collocated and serviced by a central kitchen.

The new facility is scheduled to be completed by January 2004.
