Here’s the drill

By FLTLT Peter Meehan
THE Australian Air Force Cadets certainly have the numbers to match their proud history and commitment.
In fact, the membership numbers of Victoria’s No. 4 Wing are so great more than 1200 cadets had the historic Point Cook parade ground perimeters “bursting with blue” for the AAFC Drill Competition and Annual Parade on May 18.
The parade capped an exciting day of events for the cadets that began with the annual Inter-Squadron Drill Competition, with cadets vying for the coveted AAFC Trophy.
No. 404 Squadron, RAAF Williams, Laverton Base, won the competition with a decisive display and presentation by 20 of its members.
Record numbers of Squadron Drill Teams travelled from throughout Victoria to compete and parade, watched by hundreds of proud parents and friends.
The cadets spent a demanding day in competition and, like the onlookers, were challenged by the infamous “30 knots at Point Cook” so typical of the time of year.
The annual competition finished with the wing’s annual parade before host officer Wing Commander (AAFC) Rob Mitchell and reviewing officer Air Commodore Rod Luke, Commander Training - Air Force.
The VIP party included Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence Fran Bailey and RAAF Williams Base Commander Wing Commander Steve Edwards.

CADETS from No 306 Squadron took part in a ceremony on June 1 to remember the attack by Japanese midget submarines on Sydney in 1942 and the sinking of the ferry Kuttabul.
The ceremony at the Kuttabul Memorial beside the seawall at Garden Island, Sydney, involved 250 Defence personnel, family members, veterans, consular officials and members of the public.
During the attack in 1942, a torpedo missed the USS Chicago and exploded against the seawall, smashing the ferry and claiming 21 lives.
Accompanied by their officers, the 306SQN cadets snapped to attention when the calls came in an impressive show on the sombre occasion.
The squadron is made up of students of Sydney Grammar School (boys) and the Sydney Church of England Girls School at Darlinghurst.
