Weathering a beach holiday
Rain
Stars Alicia Fulford-Wierzbicki, Sarah Peirse, Marton Csokas, Alistair Browning, Aaron Murphy. The AV Channel. Rated MA. 92 mins.
Reviewer: PTE Simone Heyer

This movie portrays the feel of a long summer holiday. Its format is slow and relaxed, almost melancholic at times.

Set in New Zealand, Rain is about a young girl and her coming of age within the perceived safety and support of her family.

Janey, brother Jim and their parents are at their beach house for the holidays.

The children’s days are filled with fishing and swimming.

Their mum supports a cycle of drinking the night away, sleeping out hangovers then sunbaking while drinking the rest of the day away. Dad just tries to patch up their relationship, but is no match for a mysterious visiting photographer.

Rain’s moral is “be careful what your heart desires”. While the movie floats along, there’s a sudden cruel deluge at the end that will leave you gasping.
