Novel role for model technology

A powerful simulation tool developed jointly by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and KESEM International is being used to develop and evaluate tactical procedures for the Boeing 737 “Wedgetail” Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft.

The BattleModel technology, recently licensed to Melbourne-based KESEM, is used to evaluate and develop defence systems, missions, tactics and strategies in a number of areas within Defence, and places Australia as one of the world leaders in simulation technology.

The system has already been used for a number of large Defence projects, including the evaluation of competitive tenders for the AEW&Cs and the acquisition of the Air Reconnaissance “Tiger” Helicopter

BattleModel uses the simple but powerful principle of “divide and conquer” to simulate any complex problem. The problem is divided into its constituent and manageable components and the interactions between them are then identified.

These components and interactions are explicitly modelled and then integrated into BattleModel.
The result is a complex scenario that unfolds in unpredictable ways. By observing the unfolding scenario, decision makers can obtain insights into a problem and its complexities.
