Motion medication not recommended

THE RAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine (AVMED) is urging all aircrew with motion sickness to avoid using Travacalm.

Travacalm has previously been recommended as the drug of choice for aircrew with motion sickness, but is not to be prescribed until more information is available.

This comes in light of the recent Pan Pharmaceuticals recall because of serious concerns about the quality and safety of products manufactured by the company.

Alternative medications may be prescribed after an appropriate ground trial. Details of these are available on the Defence Health Service site at http://defweb2.cbr.defence.gov.au/dpedhs – choose the Pan Pharmaceuticals Recall link.

The site also advises pilots taking the new medications be under direct supervision, such as a student under training with a qualified flying instructor or as a co-pilot.

A consumer helpline has also been established for public inquiries. The number is 1800 220 007.
