Horizons broadened

By CPL Jonathan Garland

IF YOU are flying around East Timor or between Dili and Darwin, your flight details have most likely been scrutinised by Sergeant Richard Garforth at PKF Air Operations.

SGT Garforth, of No. 32 Squadron at East Sale, compiles all the UN flights in and around the country and back to Darwin.

“My role back home is almost the same but at the same time everything here is different,” he said. “We’re dealing with a whole bunch of different countries all trying to achieve the same objective and I’m working for the UN, so my immediate superior and all my colleagues are from other nations.”

He said the experience of working in a multi-cultural environment was one he would carry back to Australia with him.

“I think I’ve got a much greater understanding of what really goes on here, rather than what I was reading in the newspapers before I left,” he said.

“Also, because I’m working for companies contracted to the UN in an aviation role, it’s given me a much broader horizon in my work.”
