Pledge to lead by example

Building on the compact that senior leaders of Air Force have already signed up to, Group Captains have formulated their own statement of values-based leadership behaviour.

More than 60 Group Captains and EL2s attended the recent Group Captains’ Conference in Canberra.

In presenting the finished product to his peers, Group Captain Chris Deeble said, “The compact is an opportunity for all Group Captains and their civilian counterparts in Air Force to reflect on their leadership and to engage with their people to ‘live the values’.”

Group captains have committed themselves to leading by example, valuing people, communicating openly and honestly, building a cohesive team, and improving their effectiveness and that of the Air Force and the ADO.

By measuring their performance against the compact through feedback from peers, subordinates and superiors, they will be able to reflect on their individual style and set personal improvement goals.

“Although signing up to the compact is a symbolic gesture, it acts as a visual and formal commitment to the Air Force Values,” GPCAPT Deeble said. “It’s all about us committing to developing a more adaptable and flexible environment in which our people can achieve their best.”

A copy of the compact is available at http://intranet.defence.gov.au/RaafWeb/Sites/AFPC/
