Reunion for Somali vets

AIR Force personnel involved with the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM) 1992-1994 are invited to take part in a 10th anniversary reunion on Anzac Day in Sydney.

The contingent will march with the UN and peacekeeping forces or, if numbers warrant, as a separate grouping under this banner

Thirty personnel from the three services deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia, in late October and early November 1992. This unit was Australia’s contribution to UNOSOM 1 and was code-named Operation Iguana.

The Australian Movement Control Group, or “movers”, worked with UN military and civil authorities and coordinated Somalia’s air and sea operations.

Air Force units also provided air support to a deployment of 1RAR Battalion members to Baidoa for four months from January 1993.

For reunion details, contact Somali Veterans’ Association Secretary Gary Conquest on (07) 4691 1261 or e-mail oakeyrsl.subbranch@enter.net.au
