Williamtown
team on target
IN
A consistent display, a RAAF Base Williamtown team has edged out
quality opposition to win the teams event at the recent Canberra
District Australian Army Rifle Association Tri-Service shooting
competition.
The event, held across the weekend of March 22 and 23, allowed military
personnel of all marksmanship standards to hone their skills in
a competitive environment.
The event gave those already competing at the highest level some
intense but friendly competition, and those who had never shot before
the chance to improve their skills.
The Williamtown team, comprising Warrant Officer Newton Armstrong,
Flight Sergeant Sean Bamforth, Sergeant John Caples and Corporal
Steve Bowling, beat the Canberra District Gold team and ADFA.
Meanwhile, WOFF Armstrong had to be content with two second placings
in individual events, which included a modified carbine shoot, a
500 metre deliberate shoot and the standard AARA Tri-Service match
comprising 300 metre deliberate, rapid and snap practices all from
the prone position.
On day one, Captain Kirk Stone from RMC narrowly beat WOFF Armstrong
by three V- bulls in the carbine match.
Army stayed on top in the 500 metre deliberate, with Warrant Officer
Scott Ainslie taking out the match two points ahead of No. 32 Squadrons
Corporal Gary Sherwood.
In the Tri-Service match, WOFF Armstrong was again runner-up, this
time to Colonel Geoff Stacey, who took out the deliberate shoot
with an outstanding score of 50.6, only four V-bulls short of a
Highest Possible Score.
Corporal Moose Morris, of No. 386 Expeditionary Combat
Support Squadron, beat CPL Bowling, of No. 26 Squadron, by one V-bull.
In a highly competitive match, CPL Bowling finished second on a
countback with Corporal Mark Hawkes.
While the Tri-Service aggregate winner was from the Army, its
worth noting that 10 of the top 20 shooters were from either Air
Force or Navy.
Similarly, 15 of the top 20 shooters in the grand aggregate were
from either Air Force or Navy.
Organisers praised competitors for the outstanding standard of competition.
